Portland City Council Candidate Trading Cards
In this era of a new way of choosing our local leaders, it’s more important than ever for voters to get to know the candidates running for the twelve council positions + mayor. Every group seems to be holding a forum, but sadly, the events are not well attended by the public, and it often seems like staff and friends of the candidates outnumber the voters who have come to see them.
More than ever, the future of the city we love is depending on an engaged electorate. But with so many candidates running in every district, plus the mayoral race, how do we engage the voters in a way that makes them want to have a front row seat to democracy?
Encouraging Voter Engagement
Portland City Council Candidate Trading Cards
In an effort to capture the imagination of voters and encourage them to meet each candidate up close in person, these cards, designed to look like rookie baseball cards, feature the candidates’ names, photos, bios, contact information, and campaign priorities. The cards are only given out by the candidates themselves so that the voter has to meet a candidate to get the card or trade with someone who has. I’m hoping that many voters will want to “catch them all.”
About us
Meet the candidates, keep the cards, and vote responsibly
What we’re already finding is that, unlike business or palm cards, voters are charmed by the candidate trading cards. They hold them in their hands, turn them over and read the back, and then save them on their fridges at home. Iimagine when they get their voter pamphlets, they will put their collected cards on the table in front of them and physically sort them as they decide who to rank in what order. Bonus? They’ll have a little collector’s item from the first time that Portland tried out its new form of city government.
